I went for a 10 K run on Highland Road today. It was -1C (30F) at 6 a.m. and it warmed up to 16C (61F) by midday. It was sunny – not a cloud in the deep blue sky.
Jacaranda tree-lined on both sides of the street this is a very pleasant route to take as it is never too cold nor too hot: one enjoys the warmth of the sunny weather in winter. In summer, the magnificent Jacaranda trees provide a cool shade the entire length of the street (Johannesburg is known as the largest man-made urban forest in the world for good reason).
Highland Road is great training if you are preparing for a marathon or cycle race as it is hilly. There is no flat section – you are either going up or downhill.
Kensington in general and Highland Road in particular is a trove of heritage sites.
Schools in South Africa re-open on Monday the 1st of June as South Africa moves to level 3 lockdown. Named after Julius Jeppe the businessman who offered the property for the school to be built. Smuts at the school in 1926 Steps leading to the Scottish Horse Memorial on Caledonia Hill/ Koppie. The Memorial was erected in memory of the officers and men who died during the Anglo-Boer War in 1901-1902 Amazing blue skies – these are Johannesburg winter skies for you… (it was -1C at 6 this morning) View from the Scottish Horse Memorial People dumped refuse at the bottom of the steps (of the Scottish Horse Memorial). Very sad indeed I only saw trash at this spot. The entire road was spotlessly clean. Dykeneuk (Stone House). Designed by Sir Herbert Baker in 1904. On Highland Road you are either going up a hill or down Flowers everywhere The back of Kensington Castle. The building on the left used to be the stables. Built by Samuel Scott Wilson in 1911, a replica of the Rothesay-on-Bute Castle in Scotland. Peeping through a gate My South Korean Friend Seo-Yun was based in Johannesburg for a period of 2 years and whenever she attended our hikes she used to say that flowers bloom all year round in Johannesburg. This was surprising for her as the temperature at night in winter often drops below freezing
