Intro – Hiking Klipriviersberg Johannesburg – 2023 May 7

A cold, overcast autumn morning with promise of rain but it turned out to be very pleasant hiking weather. The dassies (a distant relative of the elephant) were out in their numbers and apparently not frightening of the hikers. To quote Teslar “it seemed as though they were posing for photos”.

How cute! The dassie is posing for the pic😂. I love it.

Teslar

Teslar was the ‘fast and furious’ today and poor Pfungwa had no option but to comply. Teslar and Pfungwa set a new time record for the 15K at Klippies👏👏👍👌

Camino de Santiago

Walking the Camino de Santiago is one of the most highly-sought pilgrimages in the history of humanity. Today, nearly 350,000 trekkers from around the world continue to complete the Camino each year.

Claudia will be doing the 200 Km ‘Camino-Portuguese Way to Santiago‘ from Porto (Portugal) to Santiago (Spain) at the end of the month.

Need details on this fascinating walk?

South African Caminos

There are various South African Caminos and Belinda mentioned the following:

Harry’s surgery was a success and he should be joining us next month to host the 5K walk. Have a speedy recovery Harry.

Thank you to all who participated and completed the 11K and 15K hikes. Thank you to David, Maggie, Teslar and Tony for co-hosting and thank you to Maggie, Pfungwa, Teslar and Tony for the photos. Thank you to Claudia for details on Camino de Santiago and to Belinda for info on South African Caminos. 😎🥾🌳🌻👏👍👌

Our Next Walk and Hike

Join us on Sunday 4th June for the 5K Walk, 11K Hike or 15K Hike: a good workout, in great company and in beautiful surrounds!

Date

Sunday, 4th June 2023.

The JCP Entrance

We have been using the new JCP Entrance Precinct in the South of the Reserve for quite a while: -26.303725, 28.010931 (traveling up Peggy Vera Road, the new precinct entrance is immediately after the Klipriviersberg Recreation Centre on the right) – directions below.

What to Bring and Where We Meet

What to bring: Water (1L to 2L) and something to eat, a hat, sunblock, good shoes – and a camera to record the occasion! A degree of fitness will enable you to enjoy the hike or the walk.

This is a great workout (you will burn 1,500 calories on the 15 K hike and about 1,000 on the 11 K hike), in great company and in beautiful surrounds. You will also get a good dose of Vitamin D.

We start and end the walk and hikes at the South entrance to Klipriviersberg Nature Reserve on Peggy Vera Road (NOT the North entrance to the Nature Reserve).

As you drive up on Peggy Vera Rd the best is to look for Klipriviersberg Recreation Center (on the right). The entrance to the Nature Reserve is the next one also on the right.

Go through security and park your vehicle – should the parking area be full, you will have to park on the lawn area outside. After parking, walk towards the lappa type area. On the other side of the lappa you will see a patch of grass, a small pond and a small bridge with a big steel gate as well as toilet facilities. The meeting area is between the lappa and the pond.

Please note: We would love to have your company but… please DO NOT attend if you are with COVID or if you have had COVID in the past 7 days or have been in contact with a person with COVID in the past 7 days. Thank you very much for your understanding.

If you are on Strava, remember to turn it on. If you would like to join Strava pls click the following link: https://www.strava.com/ and register. Strava has a free as well as a paid version.

Looking forward…😎🥾🌞🌄🌳🌻

It was my first time joining this hike. The host (Tony) was very welcoming and the group that did the 15km was friendly. The trail itself is clearly marked and a very good workout.

Can’t wait for the next first Sunday of the month!

Sylvia and Shivesh were very fit before they got injured. Hiking with them, together with Tony was an awesome experience. 🌳🤸🏾‍♂️🏃🏻‍♀️

I’m so happy that they are recovering well.

Everything fell into place perfectly on Sunday. It din’t rain throughout the hike, while a cool breeze blew, cooling us beautifully as we made our way through the nature reserve.

It was a pleasant surprise to see how the landscape has changed from the brown and barren winter look to beautiful, green and lush vegetation.

One can feel the rejuvination and healing because of being in such natural surroundings.

I also enjoyed the company of people who took part in the hike.

I thoroughly enjoyed this hike. Thank you Tony, David and Jason for organising and hosting yet another awesome hike.😊✨️

Thank you so much for your comment Teslar and for the 5 Star rating. Yes, remarkable how good rain at the right time turns a brownish Nature Reserve into a fresh and lush green Nature Reserve. Klipriviersberg can be enjoyed throughout the year: each season has its beauty. Thanks for being one of the Organisers and thank you for contributing to the success of our hikes at Klippies🙏😎🥾🌞
