Intro – Hiking at Picos de Europa Spain
The Picos de Europa National Park, Parque Nacional de Los Picos de Europa is a perfect place to relax and unwind. The name Picos de Europa or in English “the Peaks of Europe” is said to come from the renaissance era sailors returning from the Americas on ships.
As they approached the northern Spanish coast, the first thing that was visible was the enormous peaks of the mountain range and that meant that they were back in Europe.
The Picos de Europa Cares Gorge Trail, also known as the “Divine Gorge”, starts in the village of Poncebos and is one of the best-known, oldest and most spectacular in the natural park.
The Cares trail is a narrow path, just two metres in width, which follows the bed of the river of the same name.
Spread across the provinces of Asturias, Cantabria and León, the Picos de Europa National Park is a perfect example of an Atlantic ecosystem. Packed with oak and beech groves, the park takes its name from the impressive rock formations.
