Sunday Morning Hike and Walk Klipriviersberg Johannesburg – 5 Jan 2020

Photo Gallery – Hiking Klipriviersberg Johannesburg

Over the past few years we have hosted over one hundred hikes at Klipriviersberg Nature Reserve. What’s so special about these hikes and the Nature Reserve? The beautiful scenery, the socials with some of the most beautiful people in the world, the good workouts (you burn 1000+ calories) and the fact that you are in the great outdoors yet so close to Joburg.

If you live in Johannesburg or you are visiting the City you are most welcome to join us (8am , 1st Sunday of the month) 😎👍👌😊😀😁😎😊🌞🥾🌄🌳🌻. A sincere thank you to those who have helped organise and host these events, submitted photos and assisted with promotion. My apologies if I left someone out. Nicolas and Lana, do you see what the two of you started?? 👍👍

Last and certainly not least our gratitude to all the participants on our hikes and walks at Klipriviersberg.

Safety – please take the relevant safety precautions:

Turn on the car alarm; close the windows and lock your vehicle’s doors; don’t leave valuables inside your vehicle. Should there be issues pls report them to me or to one of the other Organisers.

The JCP Entrance

We have been using the new JCP Entrance Precinct in the South of the Reserve for quite a while: -26.303725, 28.010931 (traveling up Peggy Vera Road, the new precinct entrance is immediately after the Klipriviersberg Recreation Centre on the right) – directions below.

The Nature Reserve

The 650ha Klipriviersberg Nature Reserve, just 11km south of downtown Johannesburg, is an oasis of calm amid the bustle of the city. Among the largest nature reserves in the Johannesburg metropolitan area, Klipriviersberg (Afrikaans for “stone river mountain”) was proclaimed in 1984 to preserve the area’s rich biodiversity and archaeological sites.

The reserve is home to more than 600 plant and 150 bird species. Zebra, red hartebeest, black wildebeest, blesbok, duiker, springbok and mountain reedbuck roam freely in the reserve.

Unique artifacts and ancient dwellings have been discovered in the reserve. Nineteen stone-walled Iron Age settlements have been identified, along with 90 sites that suggest a large pastoral settlement in the area. Excavations have revealed signs of agrarian production, the rearing of cattle and goats, and hunting, while the remains of a village provide evidence of an early Batswana community that lived on the koppies in the area. The ruins of a house, built in 1850 by voortrekker Sarel Marais, are also a point of interest in the reserve.

These Sunday morning hikes at Klipriviersberg are always fun.

Sylvia and Shivesh were very fit before they got injured. Hiking with them, together with Tony was an awesome experience. 🌳🤸🏾‍♂️🏃🏻‍♀️

I’m so happy that they are recovering well.

Everything fell into place perfectly on Sunday. It din’t rain throughout the hike, while a cool breeze blew, cooling us beautifully as we made our way through the nature reserve.

It was a pleasant surprise to see how the landscape has changed from the brown and barren winter look to beautiful, green and lush vegetation.

One can feel the rejuvination and healing because of being in such natural surroundings.

I also enjoyed the company of people who took part in the hike.

I thoroughly enjoyed this hike. Thank you Tony, David and Jason for organising and hosting yet another awesome hike.😊✨️

Thank you so much for your comment Teslar and for the 5 Star rating. Yes, remarkable how good rain at the right time turns a brownish Nature Reserve into a fresh and lush green Nature Reserve. Klipriviersberg can be enjoyed throughout the year: each season has its beauty. Thanks for being one of the Organisers and thank you for contributing to the success of our hikes at Klippies🙏😎🥾🌞

Hiking becomes a way of life, putting one foot after the next a motto to traverse life’s obstacles. I enjoy the care and sense of inclusion Tony and Jason provide to all participants. My brother and I joined the 15 km group, as I love the red trail, but due to work obligations, we left earlier, completing just under 8km. As always, Kliprivier provides options for all levels of fitness with beautiful scenery. Meeting a variety of people makes the journey more interesting. Thank you for the photos 😃

  2. Withdrawal indeed! I’m glad to hear you’ll be starting up again. Hiking is so great for mental and physical state. I’m fortunate that I’ve been able to get out for hikes over the the last few months.

    1. You are very fortunate Caroline. Things are slowly improving over here and gyms and fitness centres re-open on Monday. I am very pleased to learn that you have been able to continue with your hikes. I couldn’t agree more: hiking is truly beneficial to one’s mental and physical state. Keep well and stay safe.

Looking forward to your comment
